Mississippi permits a tip credit, so tipped staff may be paid a lower cash wage with tips making up the difference. For labour reporting this matters more than it first appears: your true labour cost is the cash wage you pay, but your exposure if tips fall short is the full minimum. Both numbers have to exist in your reporting.
Mississippi follows the federal weekly overtime standard — over 40 hours in a workweek. The practical risk is the same everywhere: hours accumulate across locations in a week nobody is totalling.

Why your MS labour percentage is probably understated
Whatever the wage rules, the same reporting failure appears in almost every multi-unit group we connect, and it has nothing to do with Mississippi specifically.
Your point of sale knows every person who has clocked in. Your roster knows every person you employ. These lists are never identical — staff get added at the till during a rush, names differ between systems, old logins linger. Missing hours make labour look lower, never higher — which is what makes it dangerous. Nobody investigates a good number.
Three checks for a MS operator
- Coverage. Total hours worked from your POS, divided into the hours that appear in your labour report. If it is not near 100%, everything downstream is understated.
- Threshold visibility. Can you see, on Wednesday, who is approaching an overtime threshold across all your locations — not just this one?
- Definitions. Do all your MS sites treat salaried managers, comps and delivery commission the same way? If not, your league table ranks your accounting.
